PRODUCT STRATEGY & LEAD
The Problem
A challenge for homeowners is knowing sound kitchen design, creating floorplans, and understanding a cabinet catalog—all while keeping up with the latest design trends in the kitchen world. We sought to solve this issue with One-Click Kitchen Design.
Approach
Through extensive customer research, we identified the core challenge: homeowners struggle with kitchen design principles and complex product catalogs. Our solution centered on automating design rules while preserving creative intent, focusing on key elements:
Floorplans vs Design
As product lead, I directed UX research and design teams to optimize our AI data capture strategy. We focused on two key areas: accurate floorplan data collection (dimensions, architecture, utilities) and an engaging design experience driven by inspiration photography.
Testing
We tested as much as possible, from surveys to Figma prototypes to working builds.
We knew the amount of development it would take to build out the vision would be immense, so we used testing processes along the way, like these Figma sessions, to gather feedback and confidence.
On-Going Impact
Our goal all along was to allow homeowners to envision their dream kitchens, but it's also being used by kitchen designers as a quick process to jump-start designs. We've now implemented this in 5 customer implementations across the globe for consumers and designers.
We IP'd the solution and I was awarded as one of the founders of our 3D Cloud Patent. 🏆
DESIGN & LEAD
The Problem
Traditional room planners require homeowners to be design experts—understanding catalogs, aesthetics, and product combinations. We identified this 'mannequin effect': users can recognize good design but struggle to create it themselves.
Paper Doll Testing
Through user research and paper prototype testing, we uncovered key insights about homeowner behavior: users naturally design through inspiration photos rather than individual products. This observation led to our 'design from photo' approach, transforming how users interact with room planning.
UX Iterations
We started to investigate if we could bring photos into the experience the way the homeowners leveraged the printed photos. Below are mockups I created to build this idea of allowing users to select straight from a photo.
This allows retailers to market & merchandise their lifestyle photography and allows consumers to design their homes straight from inspiration.
Impact
The 'Design From Photo' functionality is now a staple of the Room Planner and is part of the Base Product for every customer. We have now integrated 'Pinterest Trends' by leveraging trending photos from Pinterest into the library to help consumers find confidence.
Homeowners who design with ‘Inspired by Pinterest Trends’ photos are 2x as likely to add an entire room to an e-commerce cart.
